Scope and Contents

As I Live and Breathe and Okuna and the Kabuki Dance are both hand printed autobiography of Robert Brackenbury telling of his family history as well as his experiences growing up during the Depression, serving in the military in World War II, and his family life after the war. Other stories from his life are recorded in an oral history through the Tell Me A Story program at the Midwest Genealogy Center.

Biographical / Historical

Robert “Bob” Brackenbury was born in Independence, Missouri in 1927. He spent most of his life in Independence. He served in the military during World War II. Using the GI Bill after the war, Bob to attend art school in at Graceland College, Academie Juelian in Paris, France, and the Los Angeles Art College in California. A scholarship brought him to Detroit where he worked for GM. It was there he married Mary Lou Goulder in 1951. She too was from Independence, Missouri and after spending a short time in Michigan and a few years in California, they returned to Independence, Missouri to raise their family.
