Scope and Contents
This collection contains a variety of material collected by Robert Courtright related to his family history and his own life. In addition to research correspondences to gather information about his genealogy, the collection also contains many original documents, such as family correspondences, poetry, photographs, vital records, and other ephemera and documents such as those relating to the C.A. Burton Machinery Company, postcards, and materials related to vacations and entertainment, such as a trip to Japan or the Kentucky Derby.

Biographical / Historical
Robert Graham Courtright was born in 1915 in Kansas City, Missouri to parents Charles Graham Courtright and Lucy Burton. Robert Courtright’s grandfather, Clarence Alan Burton, moved to Kansas City in 1878 and owned the C.A. Burton Machinery Company. From 1910 to 1914, Burton was a member of City Council in Kansas City, and in 1914 he was a non-partisan Commission Government candidate for mayor of Kansas City. Burton’s grandson, Courtright, served in the U.S. Army for 24 years, after which he took up cattle ranching in central Missouri for 18 years. Courtright was an avid genealogy researcher and family historian, collecting many original documents related to various branches of the family history. After working as a cattle rancher, Courtright returned to the Kansas City area, where he lived the rest of his life. He passed away in Overland Park, Kansas in 2001.
