Scope and Contents

This collection contains the genealogical research and personal papers of Mayme Gazlay Laycox. Ms. Laycox researched her family history for a number of years and created two separate histories. One followed her father’s line, the Laycoxs, and one followed her mother’s line, the Gazlays. The Laycox genealogical information also includes a folder of photographs. In addition to the genealogy research, this collection also contains a scrapbook created by Ms. Laycox. The scrapbook contains genealogical information as well as photographs, memorabilia, and newspaper clippings.

Biographical / Historical

Mayme Gazlay Laycox was born September 28, 1904 in Joplin, Jasper County, Missouri to Herbert and Charlotte Gazlay. Her sister, Charlotte, was born two years later in 1906. Herbert Laycox worked for the Missouri Pacific railroad as a conductor and the family moved to Jackson County, Missouri in the 1910s. Mayme graduated from Westport High School in Kansas City and then attended Teachers College of Kansas City. Upon graduation in 1925, Mayme began her lifelong teaching career. She was also active in the Missouri State Teachers Association as well as the Trinity United Methodist Church. Mayme died on February 23, 2003 and was buried in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Kansas City, Missouri.
